You just booked your session, and the first thing that pops into your mind is; “what do I wear?” I personally know the struggle because I love getting my photos taken with my man, and compiling the best outfits is the first thing I think of (other than how thrilled Alex will be when I tell him we’re getting photos taken… again LOL).
So how do I plan my outfit? Easy! I think about the location we’ll be shooting in, what trends are styling right now, what my photographer may request, and overall, what is going to best represent myself?
If I’m shooting in a forested area, I want there to be neutral colours and small pops of colour. If I am shooting in the winer, I highly request neutral colours and avoid wearing extremely bright colours (I find bright reds/oranges tend to clash instead of contrast with a winter landscape)
YESSSSS, goodbye winter, hello mud, rain, flowers, and COLOUR. Spring is one of my favourite times to shoot because everyone has a fresh glow and excitement about getting a taste of warmth again. This is the time of the year when we can experiment with earth textures and landscapes.
Button Down Shirts
Typically, this is the season to quit wearing heavy sweaters, toss the scarves, and enjoy finally wearing your cropped jeans with a cute blouse. Men, continue to wear your khaki pants, and pair them with a nice white long sleeve.
Pastels, green tones, and light patters are your go-to’s for spring as well as accessorizing with brimmed hats, or a bold lip colour.
This is the season we all pray to come back during winter haha. I love summer because it’s warm, golden hour sunsets can be shot any day of the week, and we have so many natural colours to play with. Lots of fun sessions can be held in the summer too such as; hiking, camping, swimming, ice cream shop dates, or simply hanging lakeside. The possibilities are endless, and so are the outfits.
Dresses of all lengths
Cropped or Off The Shoulder Shirts
Denim or Patterned Shorts
Graphic T’s (within reason)
Basically, wear whatever the hell you want, but make sure it does keep in trend with what your photographer suggests what to wear. As a photographer, we suggest outfit choices and colours because we know what is going to look best for the style of session you are paying for. If you are having an engagement session, ladies, wear the damn dress you’ve been dying to wear. You have an hour to shoot which gives you time for two outfit changes. Men, don’t be shy to wear a basic-T with some ripped denim jeans - it’s super casual, but if it’s your jam, wear the jam! Don’t stress about being overly matchy either - it doesn’t always look cute. Note, if you book with me, be prepared to do some bush whacking, bug smacking, and wild flower picking because I search for the best locations I can find!
Pops of colours such as; emerald green, hot pink, and orange - neutrals such as; burnt orange, mustard yellow, and beige/white - as well as pastels; such as baby blue, yellow, and pink are the colours of summer. Don’t be shy with bold stripes and flowy materials - its summer! Brimmed hats, chunky gold jewelry, and bohemian style are this summer’s trends

Ladies, here are some ideas for ya https://www.pinterest.ca/autumnliggettphoto/warm-weather-women/
Fall(ing in love)
My absolute favourite season! Bugs are just about gone, the air smells so good, and temps are still warm enough to wear almost everything we can. Engagement sessions and family sessions are so popular in this month so its key to know exactly how to dress according to the weather.
Long Sleeve Dresses
Knee High Boots
Scarves (neutral colours)
Crew Neck Sweater
Jackets - Denim, Leather, Neutral Colours
Fall has a lot of vibrant colours that are already shown in and around the landscapes I shoot in, so adding extra vibrant colours isn’t highly suggested. Instead, wearing soft neutrals, grey, navy, burgundy, and olive are my favourite colours of this season. White and beige look absolutely beautiful contrasted with oranges, yellows, and reds. Flannel is a pretty popular choice for men this time of year, so if that’s the route you choose, make sure it blends well for the back drop. Ladies, wearing a dress isn’t a terrible idea, but cable knit sweaters paired with a neutral coloured pant isn’t a terrible idea either!!
Ahhhh ‘tis the season for an abundance of “WHAT DO I WEAR?!” What I answer with is layers. Sorry, bulky black coats for photos is not something I personally find appealing and it’s what I suggest avoiding right off the bat. I get it, its cold, but if these images are your engagement photos - 1. either change your session date, or 2. accept you live in Canada, and layer up. Mind you, if black coats is the route you choose, dress them up with neutral scarves and hats. Wear a warm base layer such as marina wool with long johns and then wear your desired pieces for the session.
Long Sleeve Dresses
Faux Fur Vests
Chunky Knit Cardigans

Chunky Knit Cardigans
Hoodies (less logos the better)
1 pair of insulated socks
Neutrals, neutrals, neutrals!!! This is the season that pops of colour truly clash with a winter backdrop. Burnt orange, mustard yellow, olive or emerald green, navy blue, off white, black, and brown tones will be your best friend during winter. Avoid wearing vibrant red, pink, and purple.
Chunky knit is always in, and pairing it with a cute pom-pom hat is a solid feature for trends this year. Men, be bold and rock a knit cardigan or pea coat - it’s charming.
Unless it’s a Christmas themed session, please avoid red buffalo plaid… surprisingly, it really clashes with photos.

It can be hard to decide what to wear when you are 8 months pregnant and the only thing you can imagine wearing is track pants and a sweater - I get it. The next best thing for a comfortable outfit for a maternity session is a dress! Doesn’t matter the season, if you’re having an outdoor maternity session try wearing one. In the summer there are many options for dresses such as; knee length, maxi, off the shoulder, or a full on gown. In the winter a long sleeve dress actually looks stunning paired with an adorable baby belly and a snowy back drop.
Other options are swing dresses with tights, leggings with a basic T and cardigan, or a chunky sweater with your choice of comfortable pants.
For an in-home session, think comfortable. Wearing a bralette, with a loose shirt or cardigan with leggings is what I typically recommend.
Although matching seems cute, avoid it at all costs. Your entire family does not need to match in the exact same pattern. Yes, I think coordinating colours is good, but matching shirts or prints is so outdated. What I can suggest, is go by the colours I recommend above on the season you decide to have your session in. If an outdoor session in the colder months does not sound appealing, I would recommend an in-home session instead. If you don’t find your house photo worthy, book an air bnb - I’ll come to ya!
Dressing kids can be a struggle. Find outfits that will be comfortable and will best represent their individual personalities.

If you own pets, its a good idea to avoid wearing black (unless you bring plenty of lint rollers)
If you have an hour engagement session, dress for both formal and casual, no matter the season.
Planning to bring a blanket as a prop? Avoid the blanket clashing and keep it to a one base colour
Avoid wearing clothing that easily wrinkles
Being over prepared is better than under prepared
Dress to match your overall personality
Listen to what your photographer suggests
