First Time Mom

W H A T

You're probably thinking what the hell the title of this blog means. It's okay, when I told my parents that they were grandparents, I got the same type of response. Let me reassure you all that what you are thinking, is in fact right, I am a mom now...

August 2017

Alright, I guess its time to stop scaring everyone with the title "mom" and maybe include the word "dog" in there too.

I've grown up having dogs since the age of 7. When I moved out on my own in June, I knew it was going to be different, and probably a little hard not having a dog around, and boy was I right. Each time I went home to visit my family, I soaked up every second with Meeka I could get, and felt so sad leaving her each time. I started looking intensely online for puppies that I could adopt or re-home. With luck, I came across a 5 month old husky puppy that just seemed so perfect for me. When I applied to adopting him, I shortly found out that he was adopted. My heart instantly broke, and I knew in that moment I desperately needed a dog.

The Choice

With luck, I spontaneously found a litter of puppies that were ready for a good home. The breed was a mixture of German Shepard, Shar Pei, and Boarder Collie. Alex and I drove up to the place, and watched as 7 puppies came running toward us. I told the breeder I wanted a female, and that I would probably end up taking one home that day. Of course with my luck, I first fell in love with a beautiful white and patchy puppy. Unfortunately, that puppy turned out to be a surprise male, and I had to make the hard decision to say no. I took a step back and watched all the puppies, trying to pick out the most well behaved one I could spot. Luckily, a kitten approached the property, and all the puppies ran over to it - biting and jumping at it... except for one puppy.

I have never been a fan of German Shepards, and in fact had already decided on the one puppy that looked like one, to not be the one I would take home. But after watching how sweet this little German Shepard look-a-like was to the kitten, my heart exploded. I asked for all the other puppies to be removed, so I could have some one-on-one time with this little puppy. She immediately took to Alex, and cuddled up in my arms without hesitation. In seconds I knew she was coming home with me, and so she did.

Luna

On August 5th, I brought Luna home with me. I named her Luna, because the day I brought her home happened to be the day a full moon was due to appear. Luna has been such a blessing in my life. She LOVES everyone, and gets along with every dog she meets. She was 9 weeks when I brought her home, and now at 15 weeks, she's been camping twice, paddle boarding, canoeing, hiking lookouts in Algonquin, is almost fully house broken, and knows the commands sit, shake a paw, and lie down. She has her moments where I'm ready to have her sit in the corner and think about what she did, but at the end of the day, when she is curled up at my feet in bed, I know bringing her home was the best decision I've made.
